Mary Elizabeth Tillery, an 18 year old musician, singer and songwriter for the US.
Mary has written and sung her whole life, but picked up the guitar 6 years ago and began playing her own music and only recently started producing her work. Her inspirations include Kurt Cobain, Fiona Apple, and The Beatles. She says they all share her common love of free expression and the dismissal of what is considered acceptable by society.
Mary says she hopes to become very successful, however she is not necessarily interested in the fame and the fortune, she says those are just some things that come along with success. She just wants to be heard and to make a difference with her words. She says, “I want to take my shitty life experiences and show other people that they aren’t alone. I want to be a new and unique face in music. I want to be respected.”
At the age of 12, Mary began going online and contacting festivals and event coordinators to see if I could perform. “I remember how impressed people were with me at my initiative and independence,” she says, and thinks that is why she was so successful in her early days with getting gigs. However, it did not feel like enough for Mary just to perform. She wanted to communicate with the audience. She knew she had the talent and the support, and all she needed was some of her own work. From the age of 13, Mary began to write more seriously for her music. She wrote and performed a song of her own in a local talent show in my town, yielding great support and an increase in her fan base. It increased her confidence greatly as well.
Mary has produced two songs so far, but has written many more that have yet to be published. “I am so so so excited for what the future holds,” she says.
